Canon’s Story

A Warrior for the IWK

In March 2021, a mass was found on Canon’s kidney during a routine check for abdominal pain. At first, it seemed like a playground football injury, but follow-ups revealed it was a Stage 1 Wilms’ Tumour. Canon underwent a nephrectomy and several surgeries, followed by 24 weeks of chemotherapy.

In November 2021, Canon rang the bell after his final treatment, marking the end of his cancer journey. However, the impact of childhood cancer extended beyond physical recovery. A year later, Canon developed PTSD, requiring support from IWK’s oncology and mental health teams. Thanks to their care, Canon found his way back to joy—especially his love for Halloween.

In July 2022, Canon had another health scare that led to an appendectomy. However, nothing could stop him from enjoying a fun-filled summer of paddling, cottaging, and preparing for Halloween—his favourite time of the year.

The House of Doom event began in 2021 to combine Canon’s love for Halloween with gratitude for IWK Health. Now, Canon is not only a warrior for himself but a proud supporter of the IWK Foundation.
